HOW TO START POSITIVE GOAL SETTING

If you are like most people who have set out to start the New Year off with new resolutions only to fall short in week 2 or 3. I have worked in the fitness industry for years and December the gyms are so slow, so many parties, shopping and holidays. BUT, when January rolls around the gym is packed for the first week, but as the weeks go on the people go away as well. I think people set themselves up to fail with this. They have the best intentions and say ok I am going to workout 5 days a week for at least an hour and they have come from not working out at all. Why not start 3 days a week 15-30 minutes. This is setting a goal so high that we almost sabotage ourselves is another way to set ourselves up for failure.  GOOD NEWS, it does not have to be that way. There are more friendly and kind ways to set goals known as positive goal setting.

In positive goal setting you don’t set your sights way too high and you set your goals with kindness to yourself in mind, you know you, your habits, your triggers. This is the time to make goals for yourself and not use someone else’s.

LIVE IN THE NOW

live in the now, building positive habits

When you set a goal, make sure to state it in the present tense. For example, if you wish to return to school, state that you are already in school and doing well. By stating your goals as if they are in the present moment, you reinforce your minds belief that it is achievable and in the here and now. This helps create the mind shift you need to get real with your goals. Here you can start begin to be grateful for your new goal as if happened. No more” I wish”, or “I hope” or “I have to’s” this is I am doing it!

WRITE THEM DOW!! IT’S EASY TO DO AND SO POWERFUL

State your goals verbally – say them out loud and proud! Then write them down somewhere where you will see them every day. I started using those recipes cards write mine down and I have them in a box beside my bed. I can read them every morning and before bed. This helps keep your eye on the prize as they say, this helps you stay focused on you goal. Another way may be to post them on a vision board with an appropriate picture next to it. You can also make your vision board on your phone so you can visit it often. I do have a big one on my wall but when I travel I want to always have one. I opened a private Instagram account and made a vision board in there. So I wake up and spend a couple of minutes and look at it. Or if I realize I am getting in a funk or upset I can pop it out and refocus myself.

Write your goals in present tense as well. For example, “I am on my way to being a published author today and every day.” When you state your goals in present tense it tells your mind that you are already achieving your goals in the now.

TAKE ACTION!! For the love of god TAKE ACTION

In the example of going back to school, even if you are not ready to go back to school, you can still do the research or make a phone call or even order a catalogue. It does not have to be an all or nothing event. You can take a small action step every day and feel successful.

This is setting action steps with kindness. You don’t overwhelm your brain so that your first instinct is to quit.

ASK YOURSELF THE BIG QUESTIONS:

Ask yourself what steps I will take towards my goal?

Ask yourself how long will I give myself to attain this goal?

Who will I tell about this goal?

What resources will I use to help achieve my goal?

Then write down the following items:

* Your game plan and schedule

* Your specific goals

* The ways you will achieve them/what tactics and resources you will I use

VISUALIZE – THIS ONE IS A BIG ONE

Visualize your goals as being achieved. See yourself wearing that cap and gown. Imagine the sun shining down on your face as you walk to receive your diploma. Picture yourself as a best-selling author and how excited you feel signing your book.

When you visualize positive happenings, you bring your positive goals closer to you. However, if you focus on the negatives like the I cannot or I will not, then those expand, as well. Either way it is your choice. IT IS YOUR CHOICE!

I know this can be scary to face. It is a time to eliminate excuses and the barriers we put up for yourselves. YOU TAKE CONTROL AND RESPONSPIBILTY BACK FOR YOUR LIFE. Life can seem to get away from us, like everything is going wrong and its happening to us. This is when you need that control back. ONLY YOU can control how you feel and see the day. Shit will happen, challenges will happen, difficult people will happen, WE KNOW this BUT it is how you think and act in these moments that will define your success.

So, there you have it, a few simple tips to creative positive goals. As you can see, positive goal setting is a great way to set and achieve the even bigger goals. Think and dream big. You can create any life you want to live.
